Manipulative therapies are a set of techniques based on joint and soft tissue manipulation with the aim of restoring health.

Although more commonly used in osteopathy, physiotherapy also benefits from it.

Among these techniques are high-speed passive joint mobilizations, which consist of mobilizing the patient’s extremities by moving the joints and are used to release joint irritation and tension in muscles and tendons. In other words, it aims to improve the ability to move and thus avoid stiffness or joint pain. In most cases, through joint manipulations, it is possible to modify the posture and generate a good synchrony in the musculoskeletal apparatus.

What are the most common types of manipulation?

The most commonly used are thrusts and muscle-energies. The first is performed by a sudden impulse manipulation at high speed and with short amplitude. In this way, the patient’s muscular defenses are surprised. Basically, a movement is generated in the patient that he or she cannot prevent.

The second is a direct manual therapy technique that improves spinal alignment. It is used to reduce pain.

What are the benefits of manipulative techniques?

These techniques are very effective in treating injuries to the spine and nexus joints such as the ilio-sacral, pubic and sacral joints, among others. Some of the effects it produces in patients are:

  • Facilitates the movement of the joints of those patients who have lost mobility due to sports injuries, sprains, back pain, etc.
  • Immediately decreases the patient’s pain, especially in patients with low back pain, cervical pain, shoulder pain, etc.
